How to look after your lawn in the summer months

With the soaring Mercury in the Summer months, your luscious green lawn can be one of the first things to suffer in the heat. With no escape from the sun and it’s hot, hot rays, how do you protect your lawn?

We quizzed local lawn expect Brad Marsh from Geographe Property Services about his top five tips lawn care tips. Here’s what Brad had to say…

1 – Retic

This one is a simple one. Just like you, your grass won’t survive without water. So check that your retic is on and all of your sprinkler heads are working well, spreading water evenly across the grassed area.

Remember, if you’re a tenant, cleaning and maintaining sprinkler heads is your responsibility so get onto any blockages straight away.

2 – Mow Regularly

Mowing your lawn regularly is essential to keeping it healthy. In summer, lawn tends to grow quicker so increase the frequency of your mows to allow for the peak growing period.

Brad’s handy hint – never cut more than 1/3 of your lawn leaf in any 1 mow. Think of it as a light trim, not a full re-style.

3 – Fertilise

Giving your lawn all of the goodies it needs is super important during the growing period. Fertilising your lawn gives it a boost of all the good stuff to keep it green, healthy and growing strong.

Brad recommends fertilising your lawn every 6-8 weeks, depending on your lawns needs.

4- Pests

Check your lawn to make sure it isn’t suffering from Black Beetles or Lawn Grub.

How do you know Black Beetle’s are giving your lawn trouble? You’ll suddenly get dead patches in your lawn. They eat the roots, which are the life source of your lawn, and stop it from being able to absorb water and nutrients in areas.

They can normally be treated with a spray on treatment that you can pick up from places like Bunnings. Most of the time, all you have to do is connect it to your hose and spray evenly over the affected area.

Super simple and something we think is best done while enjoying a refreshing beverage on a warm summer’s evening!

5 – Soil Wetta

Did you know that 1/3 lawns repel water? This is particularly common where they are laid on sandy soils.

Giving your lawn a dose of a quality wetting agent at least twice during the warmer months is what Brad recommends. This period is where your soil needs to hold moisture the most between watering, which is exactly what a wetting agent helps it to do.

Not sure where to find the right fertiliser or soil wetter? The staff at Bunnings are normally super helpful in finding the right product for you.

Otherwise, if you want to get Brad out to give you a had in ticking these jobs of your list, give him a call on 0419 220 428.

If you’re going away over the Christmas period, now is the perfect time to check and make sure that everything is working, wettered and fertilised so that your lawn is still looking lush when you get back from your holidays.
